When you are an Alaskan Silky Terrier and it's -30F you have to "dress for success". Here's Winston and Cindy playing "here, catch" on one of those days. Cindy's coat is a pull-over knit affair that has a pair of elastic straps behind her back legs. Winston's coat is like a Scottish Tartan plaid that has Velcro to hold it together on the front and a strap loop around his belly and over his back.

How about their feet? Those little booties come from the same shop many of the dog mushers of Iditarod fame patronize. But these are teeny and come with little Velcro straps to hold them on. They take little getting used to: they tippy-toe around at first wondering what happened to their feet. But as you can see from the photo, orientation doesn't take these sharp little boys and girls long!

Flyball Dog

Flyball is a dog relay race. Teams of four dogs. The first one heads out over four jumps to the box containing the ball. It's a 60 foot run. The best dogs do a "swimmer's turn" at the box, grabbing the ball on the fly. Back over all all four jumps. At the finish line the next dog goes. World record times are on the order of 14 seconds, for the whole team. It's mostly a big dog sport, but the height of the jumps is determined by the height of the smallest dog on the team.

Imagine the work it is for little Winston to be jumping his own height, compared to his Lab and Border Collie teammates who can just step over the jumps. Here he's showing his stuff at the Anchorage Fur Rendezvous "Mutt Show" demonstration. There's just something too cute about a Silky Terrier on the run: the room erupted in applause and cheers for him as he made his run.

Silky Party

What's it like to have a Silky Party? Click on any of these images for full-size images (about 30K each) of this crew who came to visit. Ronda Oglesby's clan from Kenai and Ruth and Bill from Anchorage came to the Thomas household on the Hillside for a romp!

Group 3 Brag Shot

The Silky party followed Winston's taking a Group 3 at the Alaska Kennel Club show earlier in the day. The brag photos are at left. Again, click on either photo for a full-sized image.
